Canthigaster margaritata (Red sea toby)

Identification

Dark brown to olive, except for a white belly, covered in blue spots, blue line markings between the eyes and on the back. It resembles Canthigaster solandri (fewer spots and lacks the pale belly) and strongly resembles the filefish Paraluteres arqat.

Common.

Habitat

Most common in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, but also in the Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific tot Japan. It can be found in tidal pools, lagoons and sheltered reefs from 1-30 meters.

Size

Up to 12cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on small invertebrates and algae.

Special features

Hard to distinguish from Canthigaster solandri and Paraluteres arqat.
