Arothron stellatus (Star puffer)

Identification

Large, heavily built body, pale grey with a dense cover of black spots, larger black spots around the pectoral fin base, big mouth

Status

Habitat

Red Sea and East Africa, to French Polynesia, South Japan to New Zealand. It can be found in lagoons and seaward reefs in a depth of 3-58 meters.

Reproduction

Pelagic larvae may disperse over great distance and juveniles occur in subtropical zone and sometimes estuaries

Size

Quite large, up to 120cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on sponges, coral and sea urchins.
