Very variable in color, but consistent markings are black lips, black pectoral fin base and scattered black spots.
Common.
Indo-Pacific. East Africa to Micronesia and Samoa, north to southern Japan, south to New South Wales. Replaced by Arothron diadematus in the Red Sea. They inhabit coastal and outer reef crests and slopes with rich invertebrate growth, in a depth range of 3-25 meters.

Feeds on corals (usually Acropora tips), crustaceans, mollusks, sponges, tunicates and algae.
