Chromis scotochiloptera (Philippines chromis)

Identification

Golden brown gradating to bluish gray on the lower body, black margin on the front of the anal fin and borders of the tail. Usually seen in groups

Habitat

Western Central Pacific: Philippines and Indonesia. Adults inhabit seaward reef slopes, with caves and large crevices. Congregated in groups in caves when not feeding on plankton away from the reefs. Often seen well away from shelter and in spread-out schools. They live in a depth range of 0-20 meters.

Reproduction

Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding. Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate. Males guard and aerate the eggs

Size

Up to 16cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on zooplankton.

Special features

The family to which the genus Chromis belongs (Pomacentridae) is large and many of the chromis species look alike, it is the black spot on the front part of the anal fin that sets this species apart from the rest. But it is not always easy to see.
