Menella sp. (Gorgonian)

Identification

Colonies forming sparsely branched fans or bushes with long, cylindrical upright branches. Polyps arranged all around the branches. Colour of colonies red, yellow, purple.

Status

Unassessed by the IUCN Red list.

Habitat

Tropical Indo-Pacific, often on reef slopes in current rich areas, in a depth range of 5-100 meters.

Size

Up to 50cm. in height

Prey / Predation

They feed on plankton which is filtered out of the water column. It has no zooxanthellae to provide energy by photosynthesis, so it relies solely on plankton.
