Callechelys marmorata (Marbled snake eel)

Identification

Yellowish with numerous black spots and blotches, overhanging snout, prominent tubular nostrils, no pectoral fins, normally just with its head sticking out of the sand.

Status

Common.

Habitat

Red Sea, East Africa all the way to the Society islands (Pacific Ocean) and North to Taiwan. Inhabits shallow areas, beneath loose gravel and sand, also seen in lagoons and seaward sand patches, in a depth range of 1-37 meters.
