Siphonogorgia godeffroyi (Cherry blossom coral)

Identification

Soft coral with a gorgonian-like appearance. The body is bright red or wine-red with white or yellow, star-shaped polyps. The polyps are located at the terminal branchlets, not on the main branches. The polyps can retracted completely.

Status

Unassessed by the IUCN Red list, locally common species.

Habitat

They can be found in the Central Indo-Pacific; Indonesia, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. They grow on rocks,ledges, reef slopes, vertical walls and overhangs, in a depth range of 10-20 meters.

Size

Up to 60cm. in diameter.

Prey / Predation

They feed on plankton.

Watching these corals can pay off, since they often contain small crustaceans and/or gobies.
