Yellow to reddish tan with large, rough edged spots and scattered smaller spots between. Its jaw is speckled and it is cylindrical in shape. This species is solitary.
Unassessed by the IUCN Red list, but considered to be common from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific.
It lives in ledges and crevices of lagoons and seaward reefs, in a depth range of 8-25 meters.

It feeds on other, smaller fish and crustaceans.
They are secretive and live mainly nocturnal, so the best time to see them would be at a night dive.
