Macolor macularis (Midnight snapper)

Identification

Black to dark grey with a white line from the pectoral fin to the tail and several smaller white stripes on the upper body. Yellow eyes and blue line and spot markings on the head (difficult to see).  Juveniles and subadults tend to be more black than grey. It shows resemblance with Macolor niger and they are often mistaken for one another, but M macularis has the white striping, M. niger doesn’t. Juveniles are very similar. They can be seen solitary but are usually in large groups (sometimes mixed schools with M. niger).
