Lutjanus lutjanus (Bigeye snapper)

Identification

Silvery body with a horizontal yellow or yellowish brown stripe from the eye to the (yellow) tail, and a few narrower yellow stripes on the belly. There is a small gap between the eye and the lip.

Status

Unassessed by the IUCN Red list. Fairly common species of snapper in the Indo-Pacific.

Habitat

Red Sea and East Africa to the Solomon islands, from Japan to Australia. They can be found on reed edges, coastal reefs and slopes, in a depth range of 0-96 meters.

Reproduction

Oviparous breeding.

Size

Up to 30cm.

Prey / Predation

They feed on smaller fish and crustaceans.

Special features

They often form large schools and can be approached.
