Cheilinus lunulatus (Broomtail wrasse)

Identification

Green color with small red/orange dots on the forebody, the rear body and tail are dark blue to blue/green with a frayed tail. It lives solitary.

Status

Least concern on the IUCN Red list.

Habitat

Western Indian Ocean: Red Sea to and including the Gulf of Oman. Adults inhabit coral reefs and adjacent rubble, sand and seagrass habitats (typically along the edges of coral rich fringing reef slopes. They can be found in a depth range of 2-30 meters.

Reproduction

Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding.

Size

Up to 50cm.

Feed mainly on hard-shelled invertebrates, especially mollusks. Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding.

Special features

This fish is shy and is not easily approached. During high tide in the afternoon, males turn territorial, defending their harem of several females. They spawn during this time as well.
