Valenciennea puellaris (Orange-dashed goby)

Identification

Pale gray, torpedo-shaped body with numerous rows of orange spots on the side and back, several bright blue spots on the cheek. They usually live in pairs.

Status

Unassessed by the IUCN Red list, but widespread throughout the Ind0-Pacific.

Habitat

Indi-Pacific from the Red Sea and Madagascar to Indonesia and New Caledonia. They Inhabit sandy (often on dark volcanic sand) and rubble bottoms of clear lagoon and seaward reefs, in a depth range of 2-84 meters (usually between 10 and 30 meters).

Orange-dashed gobies are monogamous.

Prey / Predation

They feed on small crustaceans.

Special features

They live in shallow burrows in the sand, and will seek refuge there when startled. The burrows are often built under larger pieces of rubble. They also known by other common names, such as maiden goby or diamond watchman goby.
