Cyclichthys spilostylus (Yellowspotted burrfish)

Identification

Large burrfish, dark brownish gray on top and light gray on the bottom, hard spines with light yellow base on top and dark base on the bottom.

Status

Unassessed by the IUCN Red list, but widely spread in tropical waters.

Habitat

From Eastern Africa, the Red Sea, Oman to the Galapagos islands. It can be found in seagrass beds with spread out coral formations and sandy patches and sometimes wrecks or reef slopes, in a depth range of 3-90 meters.

Reproduction

Juvenile are pelagic, adult fish stay closer to the bottom.

Size

Up to 34cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates.

Special features

This species closely resembles Lophodiodon calori which lives in the same waters but only in shallow lagoons from 1-5 meters. It also lacks the black mouth and 4 stripes. C. spilostylus is also know by its other common name spotbase burrfish.
