Cyclichthys orbicularis (Orbicular burrfish)

Identification

Small body with relatively large eyes, brown color with dark brown spots and short, hard spines. It can be found resting in large sponges during the day

Status

Unassessed by the IUCN Red list, but widely spread throughout the Indian Ocean and IndoPacific.

Habitat

from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf up to Northeast Australia and Japan. It can be found on coastal reefs with sand and rubble patches that contain sponges and algae, in a depth range of 2-20 meters.

Size

Up to 15cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on invertebrates and is active at night.

Special features

This species is also known by its other common name birdbeak burrfish.
