Small body with relatively large eyes, brown color with dark brown spots and short, hard spines. It can be found resting in large sponges during the day

from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf up to Northeast Australia and Japan. It can be found on coastal reefs with sand and rubble patches that contain sponges and algae, in a depth range of 2-20 meters.

It feeds on invertebrates and is active at night.
This species is also known by its other common name birdbeak burrfish.
