Astropyga radiata (Radiant sea urchin)

Identification

Clusters of long dark red spines extend between five deep red, Y-shaped open areas containing a central row of neon blue spots.

Status

Locally common.

Habitat

Indo-West Pacific, as well as Japan and Hawaii. Inhabits sand and rubble bottoms.

Reproduction

Size

Up to 20 cm.

Prey / Predation

Feeds on algae, seaweed and detritus.

Special features

Venom tipped spines can inflict painful wounds, do not touch!
