Corynactis sp. (Corallimorpharian)

Identification

This animal is seen as intermediate between sea anemones and hard corals. They share the same anatomy with hard corals but lack the skeleton, as in anemones. The oral disc is smooth with radiating lines, a large brown mouth, a faint yellow body and yellow ball-shaped tips on the tentacles.

Status

Uncommon species, known only from a very limited habitat.

Habitat

Malaysia and the Philippines. They are often seen in or around crevices and on reef slopes in a depth range of 0-25 meters.

Size

Up to 12cm. in diameter.

Prey / Predation

Optimistic feeder that feeds on plankton mostly but will also attempt to eat a small fish.
