Bothus podas (Wide-eyed flounder)

Identification

Asymmetrical body with one flank resting on the bottom, brown to gray color with whiter spots, the mouth is on the left side, eyes more to the right. With males the eyes are further apart than the females.

Status

Habitat

Eastern Atlantic: Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea, Mauritania to Angola, including Madeira, Cape Verde and the Canary Islands. Found in waters over sandy and muddy bottoms of the continental plateau, in a depth range of 15-400 meters.

Reproduction

Reproduction occurs between May and August.

Size

Up to 45cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on small benthic fishes and invertebrates.

Special features

Small individuals can be held in aquariums, but only with sufficient bottom space.
