Chelidonura varians (Blue velvet headshield slug)

Identification

Black with blue lines on the margins of the body, the tail and on the hair, long tapering twin tail parts of unequal length (the left is longer). Often confused with a somewhat similar headshield slug Philinopsis gardineri.

Status

Unevaluated by the IUCN Red list, but quite common on tropical reefs in the West Pacific, the Solomon islands and Fiji.

Habitat

Indo-West Pacific to the Solomon islands and Fiji. It lives on shallow sandy bottoms of reefs, lagoons and bays in a depth range of 1-30 meters.

Reproduction

Sexual reproduction. They produce a grey mucus sheet containing eggs.

Size

Up to 7cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on flatworms and is actually being used to get rid of flatworm pests in the aquaria trade.

Special features

Often confused with a somewhat similar headshield slug Philinopsis gardener, but Chelidonura can be easily recognized by the long pointed posterior that Philinopsis lacks.
