Brown with many orange spots on the head, and a black spot at the rear base of the last dorsal and anal fin. Forms large schools.
Least concern according to the IUCN Red list. The species is sometimes taken for food and used in the aquarium trade, but that doesn’t seem to pose a threat and the global population. It is a widespread species in tropical water and therefore listed as “least concern”.
They are benthopelagic, meaning they move in open water but close to the bottom. They form large schools and graze hard and rocky surfaces for algae.
They form spawning aggregations.
Up to 21 cm.
They graze hard substrate for algae.
Schools become larger as they move into deeper water, and smaller in shallow water. Juveniles are often found in mixed species aggregations.
