Epinephelus howlandi (Blacksaddle grouper)

Identification

Bulky grouper with dark brown and grey to yellow blotches and small brown to black spots. Dark saddles on the back and white margins on the dorsal, anal and tail fin.

Status

Stated as Least Concern according to the IUCN Red list. The global population trend is unknown, but this species is found throughout a wide habitat range. Because it is caught for the fish food trade, it needs to be monitored further. Not a common species.

Habitat

Western Pacific: Ryukyu Islands south to Lord Howe Island and east to Howland Island, Samoa and Australia. It can be found in rocky areas and on coral reefs, in lagoons and outer reefs, in a depth range of 1-37 meters.

Size

Up to 55cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on fish, shrimp and crabs, as well as molluscs and worms.
