Charybdis (Charybdis) natator (Ridged swimming crab)

Identification

Shades of brown, carapace is hairy and has several dark red, interrupted lines, front of the carapace has 6 teeth, the lateral sides have rounded tips, dark red lines on the last pair of legs, the swimming legs (chelipeds), a blue ridge on the merus (first upper leg portion).

Habitat

Indo-West Pacific: from the Red Sea to China and Australia. It lives on sandy and rubble bottoms in a depth range of 5-40 meters.

There are a number of similar species on the Charybdis genus, so careful identification is needed.
