Bryaninops amplus (Large whip goby)

Identification

Small goby, translucent reddish body that blends in well with its host gorgonian when viewed from above, eyes are yellow/gold and have a red outer ring. There also is a variation of this species that is translucent and has faint reddish bars and white markings between en along the spinal column.

Status

Common, but not easy to spot unless known where to find.

Habitat

East Africa down to South Africa, Madagascar, Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific. Lives exclusively on, or in close association with gorgonian seawhips Juncella fragilis and Juncella juncea which usually occur in groups in areas exposed to currents at depths of 5 to more than 30 m. May also live on other species like Ellisella maculata, gorgonians, sea fans, or even on mooring lines.

Reproduction

Reproduction by spawning and fertilization shortly after.

Size

Up to 5cm.

Prey / Predation

It feeds on zooplankton.
